Review of Frownland (2008) by Matthew L — 14 Jan 2009
The movie is terribly annoying and boring, but when I think about it now, I like it more and more. It is roughly about a man who is so insecure, miserable and psychotic that he is unable to communicate and annoys everyone around.
More interesting than the actual movie is that this movie is so repelling to the female population, while guys seem to be more tolerant of it. Quite a few people left the theater during the screening, and ALL of them were girls. There might be several reasons for that.
- The movie is completely absolved from emotions. You feel neither sympathy nor disinclination towards the characters, maybe just disgust.
- The main male character is intentionally made unattractive and the most miserable one in the movie.
- The humor is quite bizarre and often brutal, though there is very little violence in the movie.
Just to make it clear, friend and I were also thinking of leaving the theater after 10min, but we stayed until the end, and I am not sorry about that.
