Review of Frost/Nixon (2008) by Phil S — 06 Mar 2010
Really surprised how gripping this one was, not really my thing at all.... especially since I'm not exactly up on the actual events surrounding it or the interviews. Well... The two central performances are staggering, admittedly my knowledge of David Frost doesn't go much further than 'Through the Keyhole', but all the mannerisms are there and this definitely put a new perspective on the man, great work from Michael Sheen.
Frank Langella's broken but defiant Nixon is all together more subtle, and doesn't really shine until a ranting drunken phonecall ups the ante and follows into a fantastic emotional final act.
A few subtle sparks and mindgames keep the initial parts interesting, but its all about the sudden turn of battle in the final interview, which had surprising and believeable emotional weight. I really enjoyed it.
Solid supporting cast too! Platt and Rockwell were a particular highlight, and Kevin Bacon measured and believable. Good stuff.
