Review of Frontier(s) (2007) by Curtis J — 31 May 2008
French horror has been on a rise lately with the extremely tense (and rather bloodless) Ils aka Them and the absolutely brutal Inside. After seeing those I was really anticipating seeing this film but this is just proof that foreign cinema can be just as trite as films here.
This is pretty much a French version of Hostel and that's all there is to it. Sure, it has a nazi theme but it's so minor that it's almost not even worth having, especially when so much could have been done with it.
The only thing that sets this apart from the abundant torture porn films that have already been released here is that this is actually gory. This film, like Inside, is pretty unrelenting in the gore department and is really the only saving grace (if you could even call it that) of the entire film.
Too bad most of the good stuff is left for the last half hour, leaving the majority of the tortue being commited on the viewer. Pass.
