Review of Frontier(s) (2007) by Ola G — 03 Jul 2008
A gang of thieves on the run from Paris and justice ends up at a small hotel in the countryside, that is far from what they expected. The hotel is run by a very dysfunctional family with nazi sympathies and they have a nasty habit of taking care of their guests in disturbing ways. Surviving suddenly becomes the main element for the thieves.
"Frontier(s)" is more or less a french attempt on a crossing between "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Hostel", and does not really add anything specifically new to the genre. Gore, blood and at times shaky intense camera work are the not so surprising focal points of "Frontier(s)", but the story never becomes scary nor intriguing. "Frontier(s)" does become a bit humourous on odd occasions though, which I take as unintentional. Karina Testa stands out and she gives a strong performance as the sole survivor of the gang. Still, "Frontier(s)" is a very so so horror movie experience.
Nevertheless, if french horror tickles your fancy, I would rather recommend "Haute Tension" from 2003 with stunning Cecile De France, which is a quite intense and strong movie in the genre.
