Review of From Within (2008) by James D — 18 Apr 2009
From Within is a horror film dealing with a curse that slowly begins to devour some small American town. The movie is competent enough to be worthy of checking out, but still it's nothing very original or revealing: just a classic example of supernatural horror movie that's well executed having fine acting, direction and cinematography.
The movie is at its best when it starts and when it ends providing memorable sequences when things get crazy and unpredictable. This kind of intensity is not retained throughout as the middle act seems to stumble far too often with some overlong scenes.
The whole movie might have actually worked better as a 60-minute episode of Masters of Horror series; it might have really used some editing. This is not that From Within is not really exciting: the death scenes are pretty gory and well-made, if not inventive.
Plus, an unnerving thread involving religious fanatics led by pastor's son works in the movie's favour. To conclude, From Within is flawed, but certainly passable in a genre flooded with painful-to-watch remakes.
