Review of From Paris with Love (2010) by David G — 11 May 2011
You know this movie is going to be tons of fun just by looking at the poster - big guns, explosions, the Eiffel Tower (because, y'know, having "Paris" in the title isn't quite clear enough) and of course the grand centrepiece: The Travolta! The bald head, the goatee, the earring - I didn't even know it was possible to chew scenery in a still image but there you go! Does the movie live up to the poster however? Oh yes! Let's make no mistake, this is the John Travolta show.
There are others of course - I think I saw Jonathan Rhys Meyers at one point - but whenever the big man is in the vicinity he straight up dominates, hamming it up as only he can as CIA agent Charlie Wax, tasked with stopping a terrorist plot against a US conference in the City of Lights.
The plot is paper thin of course and the criminalisation of Paris' ethnic minorities (everyone from Chinese to Pakistani) may raise a few eyebrows but it succeeds in its primary goal - getting our heroes from one gloriously over the top action set piece to the next.
Guns, girls, car chases, drugs, testosterone, bombs, laughs (there's a Pulp Fiction gag that will blow your mind) - for pure entertainment you can't go wrong with From Paris with Love!
