Review of From Paris with Love (2010) by David M — 25 Jul 2012
Luc Besson made the action classic The Professional as an artistic warm up for the blockbuster 5th Element, that turned out to be campy fun at best. He writes From Paris of Love like he accidently mixed the two movies together. And he must've thought Bruce Willis was coming back, because he wrote the part for him.
That said, John Travolta is here doing his best Bruce Willis, bald and all. Travolta is no Willis. He looks like a big gay bear, and he just never comes across as a stone cold wise cracking badass. Jonathan Rhys Meyers either as a choice or a byproduct of his american accent sounds like a weenie. His character is just a by the books newbie of a low level agent.
The movie just blows stuff up, with some vague story as an excuse. Travolta keeps not telling Meyers whats really going on, mostly because the movie could care less. Some arbitrary exposition is mostly dispelled with zippy one liners, that fall flat because Bruce Willis isn't saying them. The movie tries to pluck at heartstrings but ends up playing like a blind Parkinsons bear pawing at a violin.
Dumb, and not even dumb fun, just dumb and bland.
