Review of From Here to Eternity (1953) by Caleb M — 06 Jun 2008
Fun, and Montgomery Clift is excellent, but not stunning. Both Lancaster and Sinatra (who's character is almost constantly drunk) are good, and the story is interesting, but it doesn't seem to lead up to much.
Sure, the end is December 7, 1941, and those scenes are spectacular, but it isn't like a big, sweeping, epic, romantic adventure. Two guys have some girl and army troubles, and then Pearl Harbor comes along.
