Review of From Here to Eternity (1953) by Joe L — 24 Sep 2009
In some ways, 'eternity' is a structural reversal of 'the best years of our lives,' which explored the post-war lives of 3 military men. 'eternity' jumps to pre-war hawaii, follows the petty dramas of 3 soldiers, and uses the audience's knowledge of the imminent pearl harbor attack to build dramatic tension.
it is a credit to the film that it is so deeply invested in its characters that the arrival of the war seems almost incidental. it's romantic, fun and macho, but ultimately fails to connect on quite the same level as 'best years of our lives.
