Review of From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) by Tyler M — 31 Mar 2012
Those acts of God really stick it in and break it off.
It's a stylish mid-90s vampire flick!
The Story: Two killer/robbers kidnap a family with an RV and use them to get to Mexico. Once they get to Mexico, they take refuge in a bar run by vampires...It's stylish, moves at a pretty speedy pace, and is chalk-full of dark humor and great action. The only problem I have with this one is the vampire make-up. It's kind of hit or miss with me, some of the vampires look good while others just looked laughable to me. But I can look passed the make-up and effects for the fact that this is what all modern day vampire movies should be like. Killing them with holy water, crosses, and steaks through the hearts! None of that new crap with special bullets and guns.
The Cast: George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Harvey Keitel...Clooney is a bad-ass, he really is. He strikes fear into the viewer and pulls you into the film. Tarantino is surprisingly good here as well, I had my doubts but he's actually a pretty good actor. He brings the humor here, he's the mentally unstable brother of Clooney's character. Harvey Keitel, is good...Not really outstanding but he makes the part of the faithless preacher believable. He's a loveable character that even the coldest viewer will have a hard time not feeling for. This cast is memorable, funny, and superb.
One to Five Scale: 3.
If not for the somewhat campy vampire look, it would have got the higher score. I don't know if campy was what Robert Rodriguez was going for, but it didn't really seem to fit the film to me...But that might just be me. This is a must see for those who miss the glory days of killing vampires the way they were meant to be killed.
