Enjoyable vampire film that is well-crafted across the board but falls short due to trying to put two different films together that don't quite fit. Technically, there is nothing wrong with the film.
The acting is superb across, the highlights being Clooney, who has never been cooler as Seth Gecko, while Tarantino gives his best acting of his career as his twisted brother Richie. Behind the camera, Rodriguez keeps the action exciting & taunt, while Tarantino's script has fun with the vampire genre (the argument over what kills vampires is classic Tarantino).
The only problem is the change of tone of the film in the middle. The beginning is a set up for what could have been one of the best crime thrillers ever, with a former pastor facing off against two sadistic killers to protect his children.
However, once the vampires show up, that all goes out the window. Granted, the vampires are fun & well done (with some great Greg Nicotero make-up). It does make one wish we got two films instead of one, seeing what the crime thriller would have been without the vampires while the vampire one could have focused some on the other characters & the vampires themselves.
Nevertheless, still a very entertaining film, though could have been two great ones.
