Review of From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) by Gavin M — 21 Jul 2015
Would have rather seen Tarantino direct this himself than Rodriguez, who is a good filmmaker, but not great. He gets too carried away with certain things in his movies that are just not believable and are over the top.
He tried making this his John Carpenter movie and I admire the approach, but it just doesn't work when goes above his limits as a filmmaker. George Clooney is badass without a doubt, and it's probably his most badass role he has ever played, but I can only imagine how powerful his performance could have been if Mr.
Tarantino himself was behind the camera. And as for Mr. Tarantino in a supporting role as Clooney's psychotic little brother Richie, I must say, he pulls it off quite nicely. If Mr. Tarantino decided to jump back into acting for a little bit, I would definitely suggest he try and find small supporting roles like this because it's literally right up his alley, especially with the films he makes.
And Harvey Keitel is okay at best. Granted I only got through the first hour watching it again after not having seen it in years, but I feel another actor would have been more appropriate since Harvey Keitel is such a powerhouse of an actor, that I felt this role was way too mellow for him.
And Juliette Lewis by the way is always a nice presence to have in the movies. The reason I suggest Tarantino should have directed this himself is because he wrote the screenplay. And so far, the only director that has been able to direct a Tarantino screenplay and be completely successful with it was the late Tony Scott, who directed the amazing classic "True Romance.
" Other than Tony Scott, every other director has failed trying to direct a Tarantino screenplay. Which goes to show that not everyone can handle and put on screen Tarantino's material the way he can, so this is another classic example of letting the professionals handle real film making.
