Review of From Beyond (1986) by Sean C — 26 Sep 2007
1980s horror/sci-fi classic directed by Stuart Gordon & produced by Brian Yuzna, the duo from Re-Animator. Another duo returns from Re-Animator as well: Jeffrey Combs & Barbara Crampton.
Dr. Pretorius(nice nod to Bride of Frankenstein) & Dr. Tillinghast create a machine called the "Resonator," which stimulates the pineal gland in order to activate the sixth sense. It opens up a door to a new universe where the beings feed on the minds of us in our universe. All hell breaks loose. People die. You know the drill.
A nice little gory movie. Combs is in top form as always as Dr. Tillinghast. Ken "Peter Washington" Foree plays Bubba, a dumb but brave former football player turned cop. Barbara Crampton plays Dr. Katherine McMichaels...and dons S&M gear later in the film. Bubba's demise is pretty sweet as are all of the special effects. Combs later eats a brain in a hospital & sucks a few brains out through peoples' eyeball sockets. John Carl Buechler does special effects so you know they'll be nifty & memorable.
This is a bizarre & perverse film but a damn good one at that. I still like Re-Animator better for many obvious reasons but this movie is right up there with it.
The new DVD is beautiful. MGM did another fine job. The transfer is gorgeous. The special features are pretty sweet. I actually paid $15 for it too.
Check it out!
