Review of From Beyond (1986) by Slothbear T — 23 May 2008
Far better than I ever recall, From Beyond is an interesting, creative and uniquely executed slice of Lovecraft through the eyes of stuart Gordon.
This was his follow up to the smash hit, Re-Animator, which was a bombastic splatter film that aimed to disgust as well as laugh out loud.
From Beyond is, dare I say, a more mature outing. Sure there's gore, brain munching, dimensional travel and Ken Foree soaken wet doing battle in a speedo, but everything from the story to the cinematography is much more well executed than it was with Re-Animtor.
The movie spends time delving into the dark side of our human nature and deepest unspoken desires.
Not as much fun as Re-Animator, but a worthy follow up and makes a great companion piece.
