Review of From Beyond (1986) by Damien L — 01 Jun 2009
"From Beyond" is a much better film than I remember it being, when I first saw it back in the '90s, but it's still a difficult film to rate. The last half-hour or so is significantly weaker than the hour preceding it--which actually managed to create a fairly engrossing atmosphere. A lot of that goes out the window towards the end, where it seems the writers were at a bit of a loss as to how to wrap things up. But this portion of the film ultimately didn't ruin the movie as a whole, which is an impressive achievement--particularly in this genre.
Don't get me wrong; "From Beyond" isn't a great movie. By turns, it alternates between foreboding and campy, but the latter is owed more to the limitations of special effects (as well as the film's budget), in 1986. For the most part though, "From Beyond" is a decent horror flick, and certainly a much better Lovecraft-based movie than most that have been made.
