Review of From Afar (2015) by Alan W — 11 Oct 2015
An older closeted gay man and the unusual/dangerous relationship he develops with one of the street boys he becomes obsessed with - this has potential to be an interesting piece of drama and it must have been for the judges in the Venice Film Festival to give it their top prize; but for me, the film is slow, disjointed and incoherent with an ending that is both frustrating and baffling.
Is the film trying to say that money can buy you love? Or is it a statement that persistency and madness will eventually prevail? It is the nonsensical ideologies behind the film that I ultimately find most disappointing.
