Review of Fright Night (2011) by Mike P — 15 Jun 2012
A great remake of a popcorn horror classic. Fright Night is the correct blend of new surprises and old tricks, with a number of nods to the '80s original to satisfy old fans, but many plot twists to keep those fans guessing, and often, jumping out of their seats.
The giant fanged mouths and the pursuit in the dance club instill a sense of familiarity, while Charlie's initial doubt, a daring break-in, and a harrowing chase are edge-of-your-seat moments, even if you watched the original multiple times, as I did.
Everyone turns in solid performances, with the standouts being Farrell and Tennant, with a kudo to Christopher Mintz-Plasse for being so lovably awkward and nerdy as Ed. It's not hauntingly terrifying, but it does a great job of maintaining suspenseful tension throughout.
This is what a great horror remake of great '80s horror looks like. Too bad Craig Gillespie and Marti Noxon weren't tapped to do the Thing remake/prequel as well!
