Review of Fright Night (2011) by Gabriel B — 24 Jun 2012
As a fan of the original Fright Night, I went to see this with a lot of apprehension and skepticism, but in the end it delivered. I should make it clear right now that I still prefer the original to this one.
It had a lot more cheese, but sometimes I like a little cheese on my horror films. Depending on it's execution, it could give the film a lot more personality. Also, I must say that the scene in the nightclub from the original was WAY better than the new version, and it was arguably the greatest vampire seduction scene ever filmed.
Having said that, in many ways this remake improved upon the original. The laughs were funnier, the scares were scarier, the entire cast was perfect, especially Colin Ferrell's performance as Jerry Dandridge.
No offense to Chris Sarandon, but Ferrell's vampire was way more beastly and scary. Evil Ed was also portrayed in a way that inspired sympathy, as opposed to just coming across like a gay weirdo (Sorry, Mr.
Geoffreys!). David Tennant's Peter Vincent is portrayed with less dignity and more vulgarity than Roddy McDowall, but he is still an amusing character and has many memorable lines. There's also a very amusing cameo at the midway point of the movie, a must-see for fans of the original! Overall, I like this movie for the same reasons I like any well-constructed remake of a classic horror film.
It respected the original, but in the end, it was really its own movie.
