Review of Fright Night (2011) by Tero H — 22 Oct 2012
It's a well acted, fun horror comedy (of sorts). I have to admit that even though I liked it over all, some dialogue was quite silly, some special effects were not that impressive, most of the comedy wasn't that funny and the story kept standing still. I would say that Imogen Poots as Amy and Colin Farrell as Jerry were the most impressive actors.
I recognized that the special effects are basically something out of Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series and the vampire faces from a vampire film from way back called Van Helsing. The blood and guts were not that bloody and gutsy, one could notice that it was computer generated. I think they should have opted for tomato sauce. But not bad, the effects were not just that impressive as one might expect from a hollywood horror flic.
The characters are more looked into than one might expect in a short horror film (actually its just 1,5 hrs). There is a charismatic vampire Jerry, nerdy kids Charley and Ed, and a beautiful girl called Amy.
Otherwise the film really had not that much to hook the watcher in. After the exciting beginning the film stands still for a while then there is an exciting car chase and an escape from the vampire's house and finally when one gets ready for an apocalyptic ending the film goes out with a whimper - not a bang. It's too bad, because the film is fun. So much more could have been taken from what the cast had to offer, instead of concentrating on action, silly lines and effects. Besides the cast and the acting, the other stuff remains .. well, mediocre. Its a bit of a waste. Not of time, but of talent!
