Review of Fright Night (1985) by Luke S — 27 Oct 2010

Continuing on with my Halloween inspired week of scary movies, the next one in line was Fright Night! This movie was released in 1985 and outside of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise was one of my favourite horror movies growing up.

Charley Brewster is the main character in this story, a normal teenage kid who stays up late watching scary movies and when he's not doing that is trying to get some action from his girlfriend Amy (played by a young Amanda Bearse, remember Marcy Darcy!?!).

One night he spies the new neighbours moving in and to his surprise they seem to be carrying a coffin in to the basement of the house! He puts it out of his mind temporarily, but through further night time observations he soon discovers that the new neighbour is in fact a vampire! Charley goes to the police with his story but of course they don't believe him, and sadly for him neither do his friends.

Charley eventually convinces famed TV host and vampire hunter Peter Vincent that this danger is in fact real, and together they set out to destroy Jerry Dandrige, the neighbourhood vampire. This movie really did scare the bejesus out of me as a kid and it still has that effect on me now! The special effects for back then were amazing and they are still great, this movie has definitely stood the test of time.

This is a horror classic, if you are a fan of vampire/horror movies definitely add this to your collection.
