Review of Friends with Money (2006) by Seth R — 19 May 2008
This film is really, really great. It strikes a healthy balance between being a very unique story, while still embracing common movie themes and elements. This is not meant to be a criticism, but rather a praise of Director Holofcener's ability to add depth and dimension to what could have easily been a typical "chick-flick".
The characters are well acted and developed in proportion to their role in the story, the movie has a good pace, but what really steals the show is the dialogue. There are so many levels to the writing of this movie that new elements seems to turn up with each viewing.
This is only strengthened by the fact that the movie does not beat the viewer over the head with obvious lines or plot developments, but rather allows the skilled craft of the actors and director to reveal what is hidden in the subtlety of the story.
Easily, this film is way too underrated and overlooked. While it may not break any new ground, it tells a wonderful story in a skilled manner, something that most movies struggle to do these days.
