Review of Friends with Kids (2012) by Gman H — 15 Jul 2012
Woody Allen's satires of the pretentious NY middle classes were, while scathing, still painted in an affectionate hue. Here, the updated model is a privileged, needy neurotic with the emotional range of a 7 year-old and a severe case of verbal diahorrea.
During what seems like five hours of interminable yakking, actor/writer and director Westfeldt smugly assumes that the charm exuded by her assembled cast will somehow paper over the laugh-free expanse of her tortuous script but even the normally hilarious coupling of Hamm and Wiig cannot redeem it.
No rom, no com. Stars for Hamm's drunken dinner party monologue.
