Review of Friends with Kids (2012) by Cat S — 02 Aug 2012
I would recommend this film to individuals who have to make movie decisions that require "romantic comedy" and also want mocking humor to go along with it. The humor centers on the topic of parenting and becoming a parent. It's a great rental because it's an easy film to watch at home.
I had fun watching this romantic comedy. It offers a lot of situational humor. The actors deliver a lot of blunt lines, both the male and female roles, which brings out the sketchy humor in story. Seeing some of the bluntness made me laugh quite a bit - especially because as a romantic comedy there was plenty of male viewpoint humor to go along with the romance.
I squirmed a little at some of the scenes, I think, because they were a pretty sappy with love. I also found that because the story takes place over years, I had a little difficulty mentally keeping track of characters, especially the ancillary ones that drop in and out. I also think many of male characters ended up being a too difficulty to relate with because they are mostly big jerks or too nice.
At the center of the story are Jason Fryman and Julie Keller and most of the camera time is on them and their interaction. The other characters make their appearances here and there as supportive and unsupportive friends. As a film, it was curious to see a single artist Jennifer Westfeldt, be the lead actress, writer, and director.
