Review of Friends with Benefits (2011) by Shannon R — 07 Aug 2013
Friends with Benefits overcomes it's cliche' story and actually is an enjoyable romantic comedy thanks to the chemistry and performances of it's two leads and some clever touches in the script.
Timberlake and Kunis bring a lot of fiesty energy to their roles of a couple who plan to be "friends with benefits" but actualy fall in love. The two seem to really enjoy working together and it shows as they make the best of some of the script's witty dialog and sequences.
And on that note, the story maybe cliche' but there is some clever and sometimes naughty wit in the dialog and the characters may be sterotypical for this kind of film but, they do come with some unique quirks that make them seem fresh.
Woody Harrelson's gay sports writer is a perfect example. He steals every scene he's in and gives one of his best performances. A fun flick that overcomes it familiarity with some good cast performances and some well written and snappy dialog that freshens up a stale story.
Added points for capturing the fun side of good ole NYC.
