Review of Friday the 13th Part VII - The New Blood (1988) by Chris S — 21 Dec 2009
Carrie Vs. Jason. How can you go wrong? By following the same tired formula and very tired direction. The cast wasn't too bad, and some of the characters were interesting, but the execution was very bland. If it weren't for the telekinesis angle this would easily get a 2.5, but the scenes between Tina and Jason are among the most thrilling the big lug's had. If only a better writer and a director with more panache had tackled this, it could've been a minor classic! As it stands, it's more of a somewhat interesting (mostly boring) failure.
Highlights: the sleeping bag vs. tree death, Jason's unmasking (featuring what may be the best make-up they ever had for him!), the final showdown between Jason and Tina, and the return of bald Corey Feldman in the opening montage.
As cool as it was, it seemed to me that the final fight was still a bit anticlimactic. If any Friday film screams remake, it's this one. Maybe they could throw in Jennifer from Argento's Phenomena for good measure! I'm sure the chimp would be Jason's most dangerous foe yet.
