Review of Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) by Allan C — 13 May 2013
From the no-talent director Steve Miner, who would go on to bring us such gems as "My Father the Hero" "Soul Man" and the abysmal "Day of the Dead" remake (he did make "Warlock" which was decent, but the David Twohy script gets most of the credit there), comes the second Friday the 13th film.
This is the first in the series to feature Jason as the killer (his mom was the killer in the first film), but Jason doesn't have the hockey mask yet and instead wears a gunny sack, ALA "The Town That Dreaded Sundown," throughout this film.
Overall, it's a pretty terrible film and really makes you appreciate some of the other slasher films like "Sleepaway Camp" or "The Burning," which weren't all that good themselves, but at least had a little personality to them.
You don't even get the good Tom Savini special effects that you got it the weak original film. I suppose the only reason to maybe watch this film is to see some of the early slasher film "rules" get established.
It's also a little interesting to see how different Jason is in this film, looking more like a dangerous backwoods man-child than the hulking unstoppable killer he would later become. Even the actor playing Jason looks significantly smaller than Kane Hodder or the other actors who would later play Jason.
If you're a horror film fan, I suppose it's one you need to watch for it's place in horror film history, but it's really a pretty poorly made film with little suspense, story, characters or even decent gory special effects.
