Surprisingly original for a high school football movie, actor turned director Peter Berg uses gritty cinematography and takes out most of the cliches for much more interesting scenarios, There is a refreshing lack of sentimentality here (though, to be truthful, it's hard not to get revved up for the "big game").

but that doesn't make it any less involving. It will be a pleasant surprise for fans of sports cinema and fans of good cinema in general.
