They took advantage of much poetic license. However, I think it tells the story of many young athletes whose dreams are dashed. I still remember the elderly man sitting a few seats from me crying during the movie. Was he remembering a loss he had suffered? a son? a grandchild?
Something funny my son, aformer member of the Permian drumline, pointed out to me: He paused the DVD and showed me the Rose Bowl drum heads in the Permian Band. (I don't believe they participated in the Rose Bowl parade until a couple of decades later!).
