Review of Friday Night Lights (2004) by M. Art T — 02 Dec 2009
I watched it again last night with my friend Jack to gear up for the football season. It's easily a top 3 sports movie of all time. It's raw. It's real. Peter Berg shot West Texas to perfection. It's innovative with style. The cinematography is great. The soundtrack is memorable and cinematic (thanks to the instrumental band Explosions in the Sky). The actors are unknowns (besides Billy Bob Thorton) to most of the public. Their acting is quiet and efficient. The movie has a great theme, realized through one of the greater heartfelt halftime speeches on film. It basically took the genre to the next level and dared anyone else to make a football movie after it. No one has. Also, they made a show out of it. You have to hold some sort of legendary Clueless stature to pull that off.
Side note: I don't watch the show as the movie was all the story I needed to see.
Friday Night Lights is really all you can hope for when you go see a movie. For what it was going for it executed to the end.
If you like sports movies you'll love it.
**** (thumbs up).
