Review of Friday Night Lights (2004) by Joey D — 11 Apr 2010
***1/2 (out of four).
Years from now, some people might not remember that "Friday Night Lights" was a movie (let a lone a book) before it was a television series. It's too bad because the film is an impressive and insightful look at the importance of high school football in the middle of Texas.
The year is 1988 and Billy Bob Thornton is the new coach at Permian High in Odessa, Texas. He learns quickly that you're only as popular or welcome as your win record. If you lose, the town turns on you quickly. The life of his players take center stage and he quickly becomes entwined in their problems.
The film has a documentary realism and features some excellent and heartflet performances from its young cast. Derek Luke, especially should be singled out as a star player who gets injured. My only complaint is that I think the final game turns into a little too typical sports movie.
