Review of Friday (1995) by Devlin R — 20 Dec 2013
The release of "Friday" marked a quantum leap in African-American comedies, not only catering to a new class of hip-hop inspired youth but also redefining the "black comedy" genre for future ventures.
What makes the film so strong is a combination of many elements excelling at once. On one hand, we're given the strong and timely writing of Ice Cube and DJ Pooh coupled with the vivacious chemistry of the aforementioned Cube and Chris Tucker as the lead roles.
On the other hand we have the sheer simplicity of the story in just telling what a day in the life of South Central Los Angeles consists of. Through the lens of F. Gary Gray's music-video-turned-feature-film direction, Cube's script design, and Tucker's energetic comedic antics, Friday is truly an achievement.
