Review of Frida (2002) by Pedro P — 24 Jan 2008
Julie Taymor's ultimate establishment as a visual genius. She fills Frida with brilliant, surreal and picturesque colors and makes it flourish as a rich, funny and sometimes erotic film about an inspiring and influential figure in 20th-century art.
A magical-realist biopic full of real-life pain, passion and love. Salma Hayek - besides being insanely hot - gives the strongest performance of her career, aided by one of the finest of Alfred Molina's.
The all-celebrity cameos help a little, but the show really is entirely Hayek and Molina's. Not a masterpiece, but a manditory view for anyone who loves films. 'Cause this really is a gorgeous one, in more than one aspect.
