The lovely Salma Hayek delivers the performance of her life, and sports a unibrow, in this biographical film about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. A revolutionary in many aspects of her life, from her marriage to the much older, womanizing artist Diego Rivera, her sexual liasons with other women, to her involvement in Communism, which saw her have an affair with one of its founders, Leon Trotsky.
And therein lies the flaw of this movie, I think. There is so much time spent covering Frida's social and personal life that her work as an artist kind of takes a back seat. I came away from this not really knowing much about Kahlo's art.
That said, the film is dazzlingly shot, with some amazing sequences that show her paintings changing flawlessly into real-life scenes. Alfred Molina is equally impressive in his portrayal of Rivera.
