Review of Frida (2002) by Mattias E — 09 Jan 2009
The lightweight Hollywood-version of Frida Kahlo is perkier than Pippi Longstocking, and like all biopics of lately, everything that supposedly happened to her is comepletely blown out of proportion, exaggerated or smoothed over in a most disturbing manner.
The characters are portrayed in the most extremely stereotypical manner as hot-tempered and lecherous latinos. A weird indian and you'd have the whole Castaneda experience right there. I do happen to like what Julie Taymor does visually, however, and Salma Hayek actually can act when she's not being perky or stereotypical.
