Review of Frida (2002) by Alex S — 31 Oct 2009
Salma Hayek pretty much owns it, and Julie Taymor's direction is immensely creative, especially in the way that she makes the film reinforce Frida's entire body of work. My only complaint is that I kinda wish this was less about her on-again-off-again relationship with Diego Rivera and a little more focused on Frida as a person and as an artist.
.. I'm a little saddened by the number of biopics about female artists that define them almost exclusively on their relationships with men, but then again that was the subject matter for a lot of Frida's greatest art, so you obviously can't ignore it.
Anyway, it's a damn good movie with some amazing acting, cinematography, and music, so you should go rent it if you haven't already.
