Review of Frida (2002) by Jiana W — 09 Feb 2013
When Julie Taymor gets her hands on a movie, it's pretty much guaranteed there will be some... interesting segues/vignettes in it and Frida is certainly no exception. In all honesty I felt like, while those moments were creative and imaginative, at the same time they were also a bit distracting from the story at large so I was glad that these cuts were minimal.
The relationship between Frida and Diego is most interesting to watch. I found myself wondering how these two could live this way-- and how they escaped without STDs. Additionally, I wondered how they pulled so many lovers. Physically, neither one of these people are particularly attractive. She has a unibrow and fuzzy armpits; he is rather overweight. Must've been something magnetic and irresistible in their respective personalities then. Not to mention they are talented artists.
That aside, there's some good acting here but it really wasn't what I expected as a sort of biopic. It just felt like something was missing that I can't quite put my finger on. But it's always intriguing to watch how artists live and how they became famous.
