Review of Frida (2002) by Stephen L — 27 May 2009
This movie should appeal to everyone. Visually stunning, quirky without being bizarre - it's original and extremely informative and entertaining all at the same time. The movie is entangled with Mexican culture and is visually stimulating by way of paintings done by Frida Kahlo herself.
Salma Hayek gives a truly inspired performance as the late great Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. And, fittingly, right by her side in this endeavour is the always wonderful Alfred Molina, a big bear of an actor with astounding range, playing Frida's real life husband and soul mate, Diego Rivera.
The acting is superb and we always have a sense of not only the political factors driving the two artists but, critically, of the quintessential Mexican-ness of their art. It is a celebration of colour and light and passion, and well worth watching.
