Review of Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2009) by Ari H — 25 Nov 2009
This is like a bizarre cross between 'Shaun Of The Dead', 'Doctor Who' and 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads'. Yes, there are plot holes - no film about the paradoxes of time travelling can ever be truly plot hole-less, but it's an enjoyable movie, with a fair few laugh out loud moments.
It sags slightly in the middle, as the audience play catch-up to what's going on, and it feels like a sitcom writ large on the big screen, but the three likeable leads (Chris O'Dowd, Dean Lennox Kelly and Marc Cotton) are down-to-earth, with good chemistry, and have a natural ease on screen.
Anna Faris is woefully underused as the time-travelling hottie who binds the whole movie together but she's a good choice for the role. The budget was obviously pretty small but they've used it really well, with some good apocalyptic scenes, and the direction was neat and tidy too.
Keep watching the credits as there is more stuff happening there! It's not a brilliant film but it's very likeable and amusing and you can forgive it for it's little fluctuations in quality.
Taking a massive idea and boiling it down to how characters in real life would react to such a time travelling conundrum is very Douglas Adams. It hasn't got the wit of Douglas Adams but it has some of the charm.
You'll want to watch it again straight afterwards, to see if all the trails of time travel are connected in the way they seem to be, which is a good thing. Switch off your brain, embrace your inner geek, and become an 'imagineer' with this amusing comedy.
