Review of Frequencies (2013) by Richard L — 16 Mar 2015
Beautifully shot romantic science fiction, magical realism, fantasy movie about a parallel universe where a person's "frequency" determines their status in society. High frequency people tend to be lucky but emotionless while low frequency people tend to be unlucky and deeply emotional. When a low and high frequecy person try to come together, the world around them begins to turn to chaos.
What society believes is true about frequency may be untrue, however. When a low frequency boy falls in love with a high frequency girl, he, along with a medium frequency friend, begin to uncover the science of how frequencies work. What begins as charming and romantic eventually becomes strange and dystopian as the ramifications of what they learn begins to affect society, and a secret history begins to be uncovered. By the end of the movie, there are still revelations that change how the film has been viewed up to those moments.
A very satisfying and thought-provoking example of science fiction and fantasy being used to ask huge questions and come to unsettling answers.
