Review of Frenzy (2015) by Nathan V — 02 Apr 2008
This is a gem. An underrated masterpiece possibly overshadowed by more groundbreaking Hitchcock films like "Psycho" and "North by Northwest". Though this covers much familiar ground (a man accused of a crime he didn't commit running from the police and thus further establishing his reputation as a killer), what makes this so unique is the subtext to the conventional story, and the manner in which its handled.
The movie's killer seems just as guilty as its hero, as they are both perverse upper-middle class Europeans. The only difference is that the killer is uninhibited in his desires, while the "hero" suppresses them. Hitchcock even teases us in the beginning, making us wonder which of the two men is the necktie murderer before the start of the central plot.
The absence of a clear protagonist leads the audience to the frightening conclusion that we identify most with the killer. What makes this movie truly scary is not the fact that a serial rapist maybe on the loose, but that someday we too may be caught red handed.
