This film stars (to Americans) all unknowns, and is much smaller in scale than his blockbusters, but everything is much more intense, the humor very broad, but necessarily so to off set the intense macabre (the first murder in particular) these two things are so masterfully woven together in the film, and Jesus, the way he plays with silence and din.

When the barmaid leaves the tavern and all goes quiet except the killers voice as he all but materializes behind her, then they walk in public up to his apartment and with his ominous line he shuts the door as the camera tracks silently out of the building and back into the loud public, just brilliantly done.
