Review of Freeze Frame (2004) by Ross M — 24 Jun 2009
Wow! This is one under-rated film!
Taut and atmospheric with a constant feeling of unease and claustrophobia, this film will have you on the edge of your seat literally from start to finish. It has a gripping, highly original plot with several honestly shocking twists. Just when you think you've worked it out, or something has been revealed, it takes you in another direction, just like another 2004 masterpiece, The Machinst, with both lacking bright colours and instead being replaced with an effectivly uncomfortable use of darkness.
Casting Lee Evans, as much against type as he could possibly get, was a stroke of genius. You can laugh uncontrollably at his stand up and you can watch with a smile his performance in There's Something About Mary yet you watch him here, capitivated by his flawless, edgy performance. This has to be one of the best performances of all time and I say that with confidence. His performance, and his general acting, is criminally under-rated, just as the film is.
The other cast members truly become the people they are playing and all help create a dark feeling about the film.
I think the screenplay, with a great narration by Evan's character, is fantastic with memeroble lines, in particular the closing line and the directing, probably the most pecuilar part of the film, is brilliant.
Not to mention the score that sucessfully creates a feeling of dread that never stops.
Overall, this film brilliant but unfortunately under-rated and should be seen by way more people. I can't believe no one in my friends list has seen this and are "Not Interested". Not to be missed!
