Review of Freeheld (2015) by Yanti A — 20 Jan 2016
1.5 stars for Michael Shannon who's the saving grace of this film. Yeah, it's a cinematic story (and a socially relevant problem) but the filmmakers focus way too much on the social factor and most of the characters simply aren't developed into complex human beings.
Too bad because Julianne Moore tried so hard and she had her moments, but she needed the script to give her more and it used her as a dramatic tool. Nothing more. Laurel's colleague who overcomes his own fears to stand up for her and Josh Charles's silent supporter are soapy social consciousness cliches.
The whole film gives us cliches, so who wants to really experience that story, go see the short.
