Review of Freedomland (2006) by Tania B — 03 Jul 2007
I really wanted to see this one when it was at the theaters. Saw the trailer back then and it managed to catpture my attention. I got really curious about what in the world had happened to that damn kid.
.. Well, now I'm glad I didn't get the chance to watch it at the theaters. It seemed better than it really was. In my opinion, they put too much emphasis on the racial social events and not enough on the main story of the movie.
Maybe they should have decided first which subject to approach: either they focused on the discrimination issues or the mystery underlying the missing child. I think the biggest mistake here was exactly that.
It seemed as if they wanted to make two distinct movies at the same time, and came up with the not so great idea of mixing all the ingredients in one single pot. However, and despite the fact that they weren't able of telling this story in the most suitable way, the performances - as expected, coming from such great actors - were very good.
Jackson is perfect as a solid "always stick to my people" cop, and Moore couldn't be better as a devastated mother who just lost her child. So, although it's not a masterpiece - not even close, actually - I think it's ok to watch it, now that you can find it on DVD.
