Freedom Writers is gritty and unabashed in it's portrayal of juvenile soldiers with hearts of gold. April Lee Hernandez, among others, delivers a home-run scoring performance in the plethora of newbies, and the whole ensemble is held together by Hilary Swank delivering the highlight of her career.
