Review of Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (1995) by Liz G — 02 Jan 2010
Compared to the first movie, this isn't the sequel of the decade, but the story is bearable. The execution too.
This is significantly more about the people than the whales: Jesse has a kid brother who is just the same type of trouble-maker as Jesse used to be. There is also romance in sight, and all in all it is more about becoming a family than exploring the frienship between a boy and an orca that they so beautifuly created in the first film.
Willy is back, though, and this time he brought his family along. The whales are cute enough - and surprisingly friendly - and when they're trapped because of an massive oil spill, Jesse and his new friends/extended family need to find a way to save them from the greedy people looking forward to capturing the trapped animals and making some profit from that.
The movie is pretty, but not nearly as touching and heart-breaking as the first. It's not a complete waste of time, all things considered, but I wouldn't recommend this to just anyone. If you liked "Free Willy", then maybe you'll find something worth watching in this one as well.
