Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Jonathan F — 04 May 2016
Very pleased and a touch sad to see this. Jones county, Mississippi has been on my radar for a while (actually since last election cycle.) It is the home of a strong Andrew Jackson tradition (circa 1840) that did not take kindly to a bunch of Southern planters coming in with scores, if not hundreds of slaves and setting up a Plantation/Slave economy.
The "Southern Gentleman" is very much based on the English "Chevalier" tradition, and the Andy Jackson tradition was Scotch Irish. Plantation/Slave economy was basically corporate and Jones County was mostly dirt farmers.
This has it all: slavery/ anti-slavery, economic freedom, social values, and a lot of brave people dedicated to some pretty good values. I am sad because I didn't write it.
