Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Lincoln K — 24 Jun 2016
This film is a relentless bore. There are smatterings of interesting things here and the subject could have made a good movie but it is directed and edited so sloppily that it comes off as so disjointed that it seems to have been filmed for a high school history class.
. It jumps around a lot, and especially jarring are some fast forwards to a 1940s court case involving one of Newt Knight's decedents that is rather unnecessary. McConaughey is more restrained than usual and the film wastes Keri Russell and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in rather thankless roles as the two women in his life.
... It comers a lot of time but doesnt dwell on any of them enough to make you care as much as you should.
