Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Holly M — 24 Jun 2016
Mathew and the other leads (Mbatha-raw, Ali and Russell) turn in noteworthy performances in a disjointed, stilted rendition of a fascinating, heretofore unknown chapter of American history. Great scenery, costumes, camera work; characters are believable and thorough.
The story is confused and leaves the viewer wondering which of the five plots constituted the main idea for the film? Perhaps better as a 5-part, 10-hour miniseries like Hatfilds v McCoys.
