"Free State of Jones" is a period piece starring Matthew McConaughey as a Confederate deserter who protests the civil war by forming a band of mercenaries who do rebellious acts against the rich plantation owners of the south.

McConaughey really gets into the role but unfortunately the script is kind of flat. The movie is exceptionally histrionic and the movie shifts scenes without really explaining anything. The film is graphic and morbid and extremely nihilistic to the point of being gruesome.

The film really goes nowhere and the execution becomes increasingly uneven throughout the film. Despite the film's flaws it is a thoughtful look at the power of protest and when people come together to fight the plutocracy in this country ----------------------------------------------------- C+.
